Why it's important to teach kids the rules of the road

Each year...

  • Approximately 900 bicyclists are killed and 60,000 are injured in motor vehicle related crashes.
  • Hospital Emergency rooms treat 500,000 bicycle related injuries

Teaching bicycle rules of the road is an essential part of bicycle safety. Children do not have the awareness of traffic rules and the behavior of other vehicles.

Most bicycle crashes involving motor vehicles are due to behavioral errors on the part of the bicyclist. Among children under age 15, more than 80% of the bicycle-related deaths are associated with behavioral risks such as running a stop sign, riding against the flow of traffic, and riding into a street without stopping.
